Replacing Spokes

I need to replace a few spokes on original 48 spoke wire wheels. I'm able to get the long spokes into the nipple fairly easily, but it seems as though you must remove one long spoke in order to be able to get each short spoke into the nipple. Can anyone verify this for me or am I doing something wrong. Thanks.

Aloha Art,

That has been my experience. Sometimes you need remove more than one to get them laced in properly. Invariably I break a few good ones removing the nipple. I always have several more spokes and nipples on hand than I plan to replace. Good luck.
