Replacing Pipes while the head is off

I blew a head gasket and have the head off. Before I put it back on, I was going to replace the rubber pipes for Air Pump and on the head. There is a small pipe that is on the front of the head about 1/4" and an 1" long that I am going to replace also as it looks like you can only get to it when the head is off. Moss and VB do not have these, but only the radiator pipes, can anybody point me in the right direction or would I best go to local auto store or hardware store for something similar.

When it comes to emission stuff... most of us are clueless. Where does it run from/to? Threaded? Metal? Plastic?
 
If you mean the short piece of water hose that joins the water pump to the head, I use 1/2" heater hose from NAPA.

If it is the short hose from the head to the water pump your best bet would be to tap and plug both fittings while you have the head off. Car will run cooler.
 
Is the port on the head that connects to the water pump and comes out on top for the heater core a separate port? In other words if plugged will coolant still run in this port from the thermostat entry or will it be dry?
 
Yep its the one from the head to the water pump. It would still run in the port from the thermostat.

Seems like a lot of engineering for a unneeded port.
 
It's intended, I think, as a thermostat bypass, and allows flow even when the 'stat is stuck shut.
 
"Unneeded" isn't quite the word. In case of a stuck thermostat, it can save the day. The Brits seemed to be sensitive to the possibility of this part malfunctioning. Go figure!

Obviously Mr Lucas was not involved in the cooling system design!
 
Well I believe it got its use this as the thermostat did stick, if it is the year o manufacture on it then it was made in 82. I am guessing what happened is the PO never fixed the mercury temp sender and the engine overheated, blue a head gasket. I now have a new head on and will be working on getting it all back together over the long weekend. I did get four screws for sealing the air pump inlet on the head. I have a replaced the thermostat, refreshed an old head and have the temperature sender working.
Looking foward to getting in and driving.

I made a post that apparently did'nt get thru. I invite all to visit Barney Gaylord's "MGA Guru" site to figure out why A and B series engine's have these bypass system's built in. They were designed to allow quick engine warm up by running the coolant back thru the system while the "sliding sleeve" thermostat was closed. After warm up the "sleeve" closed off the bypass. These british thermostats have'nt been available for many years and were substituted for the kind we are familiar with. The catalogs sell a blanking sleeve but they apparently really don't understand its use. I'll bet there plenty of racers that regularly block these holes.
