I understand from my other post that it is possible to replace the face plate gasket without removing the engine. Someone suggested raising the front of the engine as I did when replacing the timing chain and gears. Do you all agree with this and is this a "real bear" of a job ? And is it necessary to pull the water pump off (me thinks so) 1500 eng. 1975

yes the water pump and most everything else would have to be removed. Radiator, hoses , alternator, timing cover, timing chain and sprockets, crank pully, both motor mounts, cam retainer, and then the plate. when you jack it up watch the clearance on the battey tray, its all you get. the motor mounts will have to fanagled in and out but i think this can be done. it wont be pretty, and i would bet you can pull the whole motor in less time.

As I said originally, pulling the engine is no big deal. I guarantee it will take less time, involve much less work, and produce better results, than trying to do it, and do it right, in the car.

There must be some other things that need done as well. Like wipeing the finger prints from hard to reach spots...?
