Replacing front shocks.

I have received rebuilt front shocks and getting ready to install them. I believe I should be able jack up the bottom of the spring pan to relieve the spring pressure enough to remove the shock arm bolt and then remove the shock. I know I can do this with my MGA. Is this correct thinking? Thanks and have a good day1

I've done this many times, but I recommend you use good jackstands on flat, level concrete. Don't rely on a jack alone (this may be what you had in mind, but it wasn't clear). I have heavy duty jackstands--the kind with the cast iron, Y-shaped extension--and I wedge the top of the extension between the outer edge of the spring pan and the lower trunnion. Very little chance of the jackstand slipping and ruining my day (I've even had the car ride through a minor earthquake up on jackstands).
 
I just did my front shocks this way. Chocked 3 wheels, did one, then the other. Just hope you don't have an earthquake while you are fiddling about. That spring is a scary thing.
