Replacing chrom molding

I seem to be getting quit a few dings (probably from parked car doors) on the chrome trim which runs along the sides of my 74B. Any tips or "got ya's) for the removal and replacement with new molding?
 
Clips hold MOST of it on, with a threaded fastener on the frontmost hole of the front ones, a nut accessable from the wheel arch. Door piece requires you remove the interior door panel and unscrew it (one in the middle of the door trim strip), and another at the very back of the rear one accessable from the trunk.

All that said, the "new" aftermarked strips are ill-fitting (loose on the body "snap" buttons) and require you somewhat deform the buttons. For right now, I'd say save your money and live with the dents until there's a better replacement.

Not only do they not grab the snaps the way they should, the front fender strips I got from Moss weren't formed properly to match the fender curve. It took a lot of pushing and pulling using cardboard as shims to get it to lay right. Finally got it though. Fortunately, if you mess up reshaping them, they don't cost much to replace. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif PJ

If you don't mind not being "stock" you can replace the molding with a vinyl/chrome molding. The holes for the clips are filled on mine, but I think you can fit it without the holes showing.

In truth that sticki-on molding absorbs a LOT of impact without deforming. Just hope the door that's opened has it's "high spot" where the molding IS. I try to park in the 'remote' areas of the ding-lots...

Or, you can leave it off like I did...

Like I don't have enough troubles already you have to say this after I have received my new pieces in the mail just a couple of days ago. Oh Well, What else is new.

If you "GENTLY" oblong the buttons (in a north-south orientation) with a pair of pliers the strips will stay somewhat snug... I did it by degrees and multiple fittings... Ths DOES endanger paintwork so take your time, protect areas with masking tape.... but they can be ~made~ to work. I just feel it shouldn't be necessary to "tune" supposedly "new" parts... It's a bit of a burr under my saddle.
 
5/6 of the trim fit perfectly on mine when I replaced the molding. However the front right fender one was loose and fit poor where it curves towards the headlight. Moss sent me 2 replacements that fit the same. If it comes loose again I'm going to replace one of the round snaps with another one of the threaded fasteners to hold it in place.

Funny thing about those "bumper" strips though - I get a lot of questions about them. People seem really surprised when I tell them you can buy something like it right at Pep Boys /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
And as I said: They ABSORB impact well.

Just for the record: I think RB cars SHOULD have the bumpers painted with the car color. Looks "proper".
