TR4/4A Replacing a broken 4A turn signal switch indicator?

I removed the top and bottom screws and removed the cowl that covers the switch internals. When fitting a replacement unit do you have to remove the steering wheel in order to push the wiring thru the column? Also the the unit that is broken has plastic parts inside(probably why it broke?)...the unit I got off Ebay is all metal parts so I'm thinking it must be original unless they made two different types?

It has been a long time - but my recollection is that the wiring moves through that 'dagger' piece - not down the inside of the column.

The steering wheel on a 4 is very easy to remove (unlike the TR3) - I usually just undo the clamp that secures the adjustable portion (inside the engine bay) and pull the wheel, hub & upper column all out as one unit. To undo that clamp I find it simpler to undo the two bolts rather than touch the socket-head set screw.

I just did mine a few months ago. You don't have to take the wheel or column out. You do have to loosen the "bayonet" piece underneath to get to the wiring. I think it is mainly the column clamp just behind the dash you need to get to.

I had an aftermaket one in my car that never self cancelled and the switch broke off completely internally after a few years of gentle use.

The new one self cancels, bonus. I suspect the originals have more metal in them than the newer, But dont know exactly.
