TR2/3/3A Replace Upper Wishbone Ball Joint

I am restoring a 1954 TR-2 and am working on the front suspension. I am replacing both upper wishbone ball joints. The right one went on fine and I was able to tighten the nut. The left one is a problem. It will not tighten, the nut turns until you hit resistance. Then, the pin in the ball joints just turns and will not tighten. There does not appear to be a way to hold that pin so you can tighten the nut.
Should I assume the new ball joint is bad, as it is way to loose to ever think about driving with it.

You will have to separate the joint and fully clean and dry the tapered stud and hole. Inspect the hole carefully for ovality or nicks and other damage. If it looks round and clean, reassemble completely dry and it will tighten down. If there is any damage, you’ll need a new vertical link.

Put a regular nut on it first. Tighten that down, then remove it and install the nylock nut. Lots easier than messing around trying to hold it together.
