replace outside door handle

The drivers side door handle broke off in my hand on my 1999 XJ8. I've started to remove the interior panel and have gotten the bottom loose, but it's not obvious how to disconnet the entire panel and I don't want to create a bigger problem than I already have. I'm getting tired of climbing into the car from the passenger side!

Can anyone advise specific steps for removing this panel?

You need to sort of pull/ swivel the front edge down and out. It might help to pop the rod from the handle to the latch off of the bottom. NOTE!! It can be tough to get this back on. I put a screw driver against it and smacked it to do the job. Anyway.... After the handle pulls mostly out you will see that there is a screw securing the lock mechanism. Remove this, and the lock rotates a bit and will come free of the handle. Then just manipulate it off of the locking rod. As they say, reassembly is the reverse of the removal. Also, on the last car I did the drivers window would not work when finished. If this happens to you disconnect the battery for 15 minutes that should cure it.

I bought a new one from Welsh Ent. in Ohio, at less than half of dealer cost. You might look at one of the sponsoring vendors on here, Jagbits.com

I think that car has a trough inside door pull with a rubber bottom that hides some fasteners.
