Removing tie rod ends

Can I put vice grips on the tie rod to prevent movement when I unscrew the tie rod end? I don't want to mess with the steering arm/assembly if I don't have to.

Sure, but how would you be "messing" with it by removing the tie rod ends? Unless you can keep the tightening nut in the exact location while removing the tie rod end, you'll still have to realign.

I'd use a pipe wrench myself so I don't see why vice grips would hurt. Just don't put them where the gaiters seal and you'll be ok. you can always dress up any burrs with a flat file.

well, I can say that if you do use vice-grips make sure you use the big ones. I tried to undo my tie rod ends using needle nose vice grips to hold the tie rod but I could never get them tight enough to prevent slipage nor could i get any worth while leverage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Separating the tie rod end from the steering arm is the easier way, IMHO. One BFH and a couple of good shots to the ring of the steering arm, like you're trying to drive the arm into the knuckle, the tapered end should pop right out.

Whichever method you choose to go with, make a mark (tape, marker line) where everything is before you start taking it apart, then count the exact number of turns until separation. If you then turn it back the same number, your alignment should be at least good enough to drive to the alignment shop. Hope this helps!
