Separating the tie rod end from the steering arm is the easier way, IMHO. One BFH and a couple of good shots to the ring of the steering arm, like you're trying to drive the arm into the knuckle, the tapered end should pop right out.
Whichever method you choose to go with, make a mark (tape, marker line) where everything is before you start taking it apart, then count the exact number of turns until separation. If you then turn it back the same number, your alignment should be at least good enough to drive to the alignment shop. Hope this helps!
