Removing the differential from early BJ8.

NO John, I do not think there is any confusion , The Topic originally concerned removing the Diff from the car. Where only the Pumpkin is to be serviced I would agree with your comments.---Keoke

Hi Keoke,

Well I was confused with Anthony's cryptic post and yes I've been following the entire thread. Even if you don't service the pumpkin there are some good reasons to consider removing the pumpkin and axles to make it easier to manhandle the diff housing in and out since the space is confined. It can be done as one assembly as I suggested early on but some people are concerned with lifting awkward heavy weights and scratching their new paint. But maybe you have a better way to remove the diff housing since you recommended removing the springs and dropping it out the bottom. Please tell us how that is done.

Cheers,
John

HI John, as I initially indicated I use jacks to roll the entire diff out from under the car.---Keoke

Hi Keoke,

That would be a great way to do it ... I wish it was so easy ... but last time I checked, the frame rails are in the way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Cheers and Happy New Year,

Well John, I do not recall the factory manual requiring you to remove the frame rails to get a fully assembled Diff out the right hand side of the car.So the frame rail's presence is Moot.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I would put a jack under the DIFF and remove the springs. do not remove the brake drums and carefully lower the diff to the ground .You can now roll it out from under the car.---Fwiw--Keoke

Nice recovery /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif I'll bet the workshop manual doesn't say to do it like above either (unless it's a Chevy workshop manual) Now you say it needs to come out the side so we are in total agreement. Wasn't that easy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Cheers,
John

John, That work shop manual tells you to do a lot of things that are Unnecessary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif-I will ceed that the earlier post was a bit too brief. However I still use jacks to remove em.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
