removing stearing colum

Yay.

Though I consider him a bit "ham-fisted" at times, John Twist has a youtube vid of a steering wheel removal technique which works.

Then you can peer into the "jaws of the dilemma".
I don't like his method of removal because it calls for using the BFH! Most steering wheels will come off if, after removing the lrge nut, you spraw inside the threaded column with PB Blaster & let them sit - then assume the position & gut strain! Only when I've tried everything, will I put the nut back on & hit tit with the BFH.

Remember, its a collapsible column & just banging it with the hammer could damage it.

If it does seem to need more than a grunt as persuasion, I use a dead-blow or a plastic hammer. Anything more and you'll be dressin' threads...

Or you'll have a column that is already compressed & won't help at all in an accident; plus, the bushings inside could be knocked out of place with the hammering.

that would be no good. unfortunately, at times i am a bit more rough on things then i should be so much appreciated words of wisdom

so had to get to a store for the right size socket. nut is off but i cant pul the wheel off. gut strength i must not have enough of. is it ok to wiggle the wheel back and forth? or should it be a smooth pull back till it pops off?

Wiggle is good, did you get the PB Blaster spritzed down in the hub? Give it a few hours to soak, treat it again. If you still have no joy, put the nut back on until it's flush with the hub's threaded bit, get a piece of hardwood small enuff to fit in the hub and rest on the nut/shaft and have someone TAP the center with a hammer as you apply outward pressure ~evenly~ around the wheel with knees at the "four O'clock" and "eight O'clock" spots and a hand at the "noon" position.

pb is soaking. i guess i will let it sit for a while. i need to clean my points any way. at least its warmed up here a bit. after this one time it should come off easy right?

After you get it off, clean up the splines of both parts and put a LIGHT film of anti-sieze compound on the splines before reassembly. It'll POP off the next time.

the wheel is off! but i cant still cant see much. a piece of metal is bolted between m,e and the wires. i wont be able to get them off with the cowl on. i am so close to ripping that thing off.

Now that the wheel is out of the way...can you see all the holes along each side of the cowl pieces?

Does your Phillips screwdriver hit screw heads about an inch or more down inside them? Some of those screws go into the other side & some of them hold the assemblt to the column.

Can you tell if somebody has glued the 2 sides together?

Be very careful if you decide to trash the cowl - there are little "L" arms turned horizontal that hold the cowl to the column

ok its off. i will stat a new thread to talk about my real problem. the turn signals break lights and starter not working.

Great.....is it reusable?

not really. i can put it back on it just wont be as tight. i dont know what the po did but screw were not holding it together. i have a list of things to get and problems to trouble shoot. a new one would be lower on the priority list. an MG Jack though, that would be nice

Before you look at a new one, PM me with particulars, & I'll look through my shelf of cowls.
