Removing Overdrive Shaft Lever Pin

I have an 1961 AH BT7 with a leak coming from the lever shaft on the right side of the overdrive. It appears easy to change the O Ring seal, but in order to do so you have to remove the pin holding the lever onto the lever shaft. That seems like a simple job of using a punch to push out the pin. However, the pin just won't budge. In fact, I bent the punch. I also tried heating up the shaft, lever, and pin several times, but it still won't budge. I know that I can drill the pin out, but I am very hesitant to do that because I am such a crooked driller that I know that I will screw up the shaft and the lever. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove that pin?

IIRC, it's a solid, tapered pin; have you tried driving it out from both directions? I replaced my O-ring with a square cross-section 'O'-ring a while back; I replaced the tapered pin with a roll pin.

Thanks for the information on the taper of the pin. I did not know that. I only tried extracting the pin from the top down. I won't be able to get down to my shop for a few days but as soon as I do I will try extracting the pin from the bottom up. I will report back.

I did make it down to my shop and I tried driving the pin out from the bottom up. No luck. It looks to me like my only alternative is to very carefully drill the pin out. Do you have any other suggestions or advice on drilling out the pin?

Sorry, can't help; I'd probably try penetrant, heat, etc. a few more times, though. I've usually made a mess when I've tried to drill out a stuck bolt, pin, etc. I'm surprised it didn't come out, though; mine came out relatively easily (the tapered pin on the clutch slave fulcrum shaft was a different story, however).

Thanks for the reply. I think I will wait until I take the transmission out of the car. I have to remove the overdrive anyway to change some gaskets. When the overdrive unit is up on the bench I will get much better access to the set pin and better leverage on it. Thanks again, I will let you know what happens.

Keeping the bit centered is the hard part; if you have access to a drill press that should help. I think those pins are made of a hardened steel, but this particular one isn't under much stress; it just keeps the 'adjustment' lever from falling off.
