Removing king pin from stub axle of BN6

As I said in another post, I cannot put any grease into the grease nipple of the stub axle. As advised I now want to remove the king pin from the stub axle, clean it and re-assemble the unit.

Since I am a newbie on that, I want to ask you if this task can be done by a novice and if there is anything I should pay attention to.

Volker, Hi . Before you start tearing it apart try heating the grease fitting and the area around it with a propane torch. That will fix it and allow grease to pass if thats the problem. It can be pretty involved tearing the kingpin assy. down.
 
Volker, remove the grease nipple and and try to pump grease thrue it. Sometimes its just the nipple that gets clogged.

There are a number of nipples, which one can you not service - the top trunnion or the one at the end of the outer fulcrum pin or the one at the base of the King pin

The spring! Definitely pay the most attention to removing and replacing the spring. There's a lot of energy stored in a compressed spring, and not done properly could hurt you.

It's been covered here in great detail, and I alone, plus others, have posted many, many pictures on the subject of front suspension overhaul.

I agree with all the others here, and avoid taking it apart if it's only the grease fitting that's clogged.
 
Thank you for all of your comments. The nipple itself is fine. I removed it and was able to put grease through it. Thus I will try the propane torch approach first before disassembling the stuff :encouragement: Is there the danger to damage the front suspension because of overheating?
 
The only thing that a propane torch heat would damage is paint and rubber, like the trunion bushes. But you'll probably set all the accumulated grease and oil on fire and then get fire extinguisher cr-p over everything so it would be best to thoroughly de-grease everything first.
 
Why not try boiling water first ...
 
A grease gun can do 5000psi easily, probably 10,000 if you're really determined. That is more than enough to shift any debris. If it isn't taking grease then something else is wrong. Possibly somebody replaced the bushing and didn't line up a grease hole? Are you referring to the grease nipple in the lower left of this pic?

Just heat it up enough to soften the grease ! Fer gosh sakes! Perhaps I use a more delicate approach than you do. I've done this countless times without catching a car on fire. I'd certainly do it to keep from tearing the suspension apart ! If hardened grease is the problem it won't take much heat at all.
 
I'm sure that you noticed that my response was intended to be at least partially humorous...

What, you've never set a car on fire??
