removing fenders on a BJ8

Hey all,
I am preparing to repaint a 1967 BJ8 I recently purchased
and stripping off all chrome, etc. How difficult is it to
remove the chrome beading without taking the fenders all
the off ? If I just loosen up the bolts should I be able
to pull the beading out - first bending the tabs straight -
without too much trouble or am I being optimistic when dealing
with 42 year old beading and fenders ??? Any tips or suggestions would be very appreciated.

Hi Mike yes that is the way it is done. However. be sure it is physically OK no dents or scratches that can not be buffed out. Experience says replace it with new.---Keoke

Where ever you are able, look/reach under the wings to see if the metal tabs on the beading have been bent at an acute angle to help secure the beading when tightening down the bolts. The beading will come out much more easily if you straighten these pieces. The harder part is getting the beading in and sitting flush as you snug the bolts. Do not pull on the tabs too hard or press on the bead too hard. The tabs can pull out and the bead is fairly easy to deform. Somebody once told me that.
