For the last 50 years since I bought my BE I have been using a dime and a 7/16" nut to hold the choke knob out when warming up the car. The twist lock mechanism for the choke was broke from the start and I just never replaced it. However now is the time. I have a working choke cable sitting on the shelf. Unfortunately is from a later Sprite with the word "choke" on the knob.
How do I remove the knobs form both cables and install the correct knob with the nice "C" on the working cable.
I am sure I am missing something simple here as replacement knobs are available from Bug Eye Guy and some fellow in Australia.

The knob doesn't come off the later cables...only the early ones. To remove the knobs there should be a little hole on one side of the knob. If you use some little implement to push in on the pin inside the knob should slide off.

I've never seen a removable choke knob. If you can get a replacement knob, you'll either need to cut off or maybe heat the metal portion to separate the knob, then epoxy a new one on.
 
The knob does not come off. The replacement from Bugeye Guy is a compete choke cable not just the knob. To my knowledge the Bugeye did not have a twist to lock feature on the choke. Mine has the original choke cable and unless the feature is broken mine does not twist and lock.
 
Just had a look and Gerard is correct as usual the choke knob does not have the pin on it as the wiper knob. it looks like the locking mechanism on the "salvaged" cable is swaged onto the cable so just trying to switch the cable part will not work.
Any Idea when the locking mechanism was added to the choke cable.
I guess I will stick with my dime and 7/16" nut
 
I was wondering if the knob would come off an early cable. Should have went and looked at my BE. And yes the early cables don't lock but not many seconds should get it warm enough to start out.

Kurt and for 50 years I thought the choke cable was broken.
 
I find it halarious that we all have some sort of choke retaining 'ring' mine is an old intake to carb ring.
 
I wish I could find another choke cable like the one on my Morris Minor. It has some sort of detents in it as you pull it out, feels like maybe a small ball bearing. Clicks easily into a couple different detents, and just a 1/4 twist to release it. Smooth and simple. I think it's what was there from the factory, but I don't know. Certainly looks stock, and works nicely.
 
As it appears that the original BE choke cable did not have the twist to lock feature I am curious what everyone uses to hold the cable out while the motor warms up.
I use a dime or a 7/16 nut and Jedi uses a intake alignment ring.
What are some of the things other BE owners use??
