removing a leaf spring

Hello all. I have 54 BN1 (in lots of pieces) and I'm trying to remove the original rear springs. I can't press the front pins out, so I'm wondering if it's just corrosion, or am I missing something? I have the nuts off, but the head of the pin seems seized to the outside flange of each bracket. Should it press right out? Thanks for any insight.

Its probably rust welded together. You can try to soak with penetrating oil for a few days but you're most likely going to have to cut the bolt on both sides. Been there done that.

Thanks Marv. I'm getting on it with a grinder. Also noticed that someone put a weld bead on the head of the left side pin. Ugh!

The setup looks like the picture below. One side is welded. Let me know if you need more pictures.

I'm confused (or Duane is :wink: )...

Ray's talking about a rear leaf spring bolt (pin) and Duane posted a picture of a front lower/inner A-arm pivot pin (bolt).

Ray, I've succeeded in removing them by cutting the bolt head/nut-stud ends off, and then levering the sheetmetal hanger, spreading it enough to get the spring free.

The hanger is easily brought back into shape, and I presume you're replacing the springs anyway.

Use a little Kopr-Shield on the replacement bolt, to prevent the same thing from happening again in the future.

Thanks guys. I ground off most the head and ended up making a tool that could be clamped to the spring for pressing out the pin. I don't like cutting things, especially original parts, but it looks like these pins are easy to come by. The chassis goes out for sand blasting now, then I get to start putting things back together instead of taking them apart. Hooray!
