Removal of shock links

I am in the process of replacing bits in the suspension, and last night I tried to replace the rear shock links on the BE. After beating on it with a hammer, I looked at the new ones and saw they are a tapered fit. Any suggestions on how to seperate that with the shock in the car?

Use a puller or ball joint splitter?

Tighten as much as possible and then hit with a hammer to give extar force.

Which end of the link is tapered? Is it both? (can't remember, it's such a long time since I took mine off).

If it's only the end that joins to the lever arm maybe take the shock off the car and do it on the bench.

May need to apply heat as well?

They can be a bugger to separate. John has it right, two bolts hold the damper to the chassis, easy enough to get it off the car and on the bench. Much better chance of applying "proper force" to it there. Only the top of the link is tapered... but the bottom stud attaching it to the shackle is mounted in rubber and can pose its own issues if it spins inside that ball.

I'd use moderate heat and loose-juice on the taper, run it thru a few heat cycles. A ball-joint removal tool and a BFH should do the rest of it.

Hold 2# hammer against one side of the ring and hit other side with 1# hammer. The blow will cause the taper to loosen.

Right on!!!

And it works EVERY TIME!

Helps if #2 hammer is considerably bigger than #1. (Can't have too many hammers!!!)

Kurt.

Sounds fun. Maybe I will just order my shocks from Peter while I am at it
