Today the manufacturers are trying to pass legislation to copyright all cars so they cannot be altered by upgrades or touched by anyone but their trained mechanics at their dealers only.

Perfect reason to keep our older cars in good working order.:encouragement: PJ

I've seen that about trying to copyright much of cars content. Really dirty trick but do as Paul suggested. Also my son had one of those V8 Monzas years ago.

A co-worker held on to a car for years with one headlight due to a $1000 controller replacement cost; figured that one could pay a lot of tickets for that amount.

HE sure better be glad he didn't live in S California,as he would be in jail or have to have three jobs.

BMW Accomplished the same thing and did not need any legislation.

BMWs are easily modified by PC and programs bought aftermarket. There are so many computer car geeks, we can adjust just about any car run on the track.

This brings up a question I've been wondering - how will current cars be "restored" 15-20 - or 30-40 - years from now? With all the computer and electrical components to go bad, is there any hope of being able to keep the current generation of cars going in the future? When a mother board fails, taking out half of the car's systems, will there be scrapyards full of otherwise sound cars that are no longer functional because the electronics are obsolete and unrepairable? I may be speaking too generally, but I think you get the idea.

I do not have any financial interest, just a satisfied customer: getbmwparts.com is my go-to place for BMW parts. They are a BMW dealer and thus only sell OEM, but the on-line pricing is roughly 25% less than over-the-counter pricing. You can get less expensive parts elsewhere; for example the referenced controller is $413, vs. 500 at the dealer and 230 at other on-line retailers. https://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog is a great on-line parts catalog to get the part numbers.
