hey, i have an 88 xjs, i have 2 missing relays above the radiator and cannot figure out what they are, one appears to connect to the aux fan, but i'm not sure. any help will be appreciated. thanks
 
Not sure about a 1988 but some fans do work off of relays. Do you have 2 fans and are they working?
 
In the 88 XJ6, the aux fan relay is located on the radiator bracing. I think it has a red base.
 
In my reply, I meant the XJS has the relay on the radiater brace.
 
i have not seen the aux fan work yet. this car is so hard to figure stuff out on bec it's like an in between year. i have the manual but it says i should have 4 relays there but only 2 are. some of the rlays the manual say should be there, are located onthe left front fnder well. this stuff is confusing me.
 
When dealing with the XJ-S '88 or '89 model you have to take most things with a grain of salt. However, my book says your two missing relays are theHeadlamp Wash/Wipe Relay and the Headlamp Wash/Wipe Diode Pack. It also shows your cooling fan relay to be the bottom one behind the Left Headlamp Assembly. I'm not guaranteeing anything here, but, my 90 has empty sockets also

If you think you are getting into a poorly documented condition such as we are dicussing, then either physically trace the wires or run continuity checks to nail down what wires and relays service which switches or motors. I have found the 90 and 91 XJS configurations to be pretty well documented. Look out for the 88 and 89 configurations. There are a lot of variations and deviations.
 
can anyone explain this? I was having problems getting my car started for the first time,(i bought her non-running), It was something to do with the injectors and fuel pump not working, i figured out it was the main relay, so i ordered a new main relay, and a fuel pump relay in case it was bad too. the new relays didn't work, so I was trying some things out and i got it working by using 2 fuel pump relays, one for the fuel pump and one where the main relay goes. now from my understanding the only difference btw the fuel pump relay and the main relay is a diode in the main relay. any one have any ideas?
 
You first have to specify what kind of Jag it is and the year, etc., and I might be able to help you out.
 
OK, and don't take this personal, but, are you absolutely <u>sure</u> your battery is not hooked up backwards?
The diode in that relay is there so that the relay will not pick up if the power is reversed. Reversed power will eat you ECUs.

I hope I'm not the bearer of bad news.

Make sure your battery is hooked up right before you try again, just in case you haven't blown everything up.

i double checked the battery and of course it's right. I can tell you this much though, the whole electical system in this car is messed up, different this will and then not work day to day.
 
If the Battery is right that's good news now the trick becomes figuring out why the relay won't pick up. I would guess that maybe somehow or another the wiring to that relay coil is backwards. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Of course lets keep it simple to start... check your new main relay and ensure it will pick up with power, say straight from the battery.
