I would like to know if these 2 engine control reinforcement brackets should be painted black, or not.

Mine are, but easy to take the paint off if not correct.
see attachment.

You'll also see in the photo that the water return pipe was not painted green. What do I need to do, to paint it? Scuff it, prime it, paint it? Any special primer? Or maybe I don't need to prime?

Thank you, 64 BJ8, Roger

Hi Roger, I don't know for sure about the brackets, but mine are painted black, and it is suppose to be an unrestored car. The water return pipe has been bare copper on every healey I have seen, including mine.
gives you some nice shiney stuff to brighten the ole bay up with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

HI Roger,The vertical bracket holding the choke cable is usually painted engine color as is the copper heater return pipe. The two brackets that support the throttle return springs are usually black. However, my copper water return pipes are left unpainted and are regularly polished.--Fwiw---Keoke

Hi Roger,

The throttle brackets were originally painted black and the Choke brackets are zinc plated. If you are going to paint the copper tube engine green (per factory), then scuff with scotch brite, clean with lacquer thinner and use a self-etch primer.

Cheers,
John

Oh my, so clean, I like it. Must be a joy to mess with.

You seem to be doing a very meticulous in your efforts. I would suggest your obtaining a copy of the Austin-Healey Concours Registry Originality Guide. It will answer many of your questions. I personally think that the polished copper water pipe makes for a more interesting engine compartment, but it's not the way it came from the factory, as apparently the entire engine, but for the distributor and carbs, was painted as a unit.

So, the choke bracket was sometimes painted black and sometimes zinc plated? Both are acceptable?

The choke bracket mounted on the scuttle [Fire Wall] was always plated Roger. However,it may not be clear which choke cable bracket is being discussed or just Keoke is /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

The concours guidelines say the choke bracket on the firewall is zinc plated. It says the choke bracket near the carb is plain steel or zinc plated.

If the bracket was plain steel it is easy to imagine that many have been painted engine color or black over the years to keep from rusting. It is also possible that some came from the factory painted black and the concours people just don't know it or recognize it. Ask Reid about the inconsistancies in the Concours quidelines! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My question was/is about the two brackets in my photo. Currently, both painted black. One bracket is horizontal screwed to the engine, and the other is vertical, holding the choke cable. Sorry for the confusion, is that clearer?

From my orginal question I find another item on my car which is not correct. Keoke now informs me that the bracket mounted on the fire wall should be plated, where as mine I find was painted black. I will change that. Thank you Keoke.

Maybe I should just take a photo of my engine compartment and let you guys have at it. Wow, she's clean, but here is a long list of items you need to make changes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

I don’t think BCF has the bandwidth for me to do that with my engine bay. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, Please!
I have the Austin-Healey 100/100-6/3000 Restoration Guide and the Workshop Manual. Plus I look at the breakdown in the Moss Motors catalog. Yet still I find myself here, asking question.

Where can I purchase the Austin-Healey Concours Registry Originality Guide? Any link you can send me too?

Roger

Yep John, those guidelines are a bit subjective to say the least. But at least now they have a consistent guide line---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OH MY GOSH don't do that Roger! cuz I see them non british grade 8 bolts in there and no throttle stop on the manifolds if you do that you won't be able to drive this car for another 19 Months. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif.Seriously,you only showed two of the brackets that are involved, there are three on the manifold. Two of which you have shown and the little one holding the rear carburetor throttle return spring is the third one and is also painted BLACK. The near vertical choke cable support bracket you show must be per personal choice unless you are to go along with concours.Mine are engine green.-Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif
