According to the chart I have the 1957-1961 Bugeye had two possible colors, Cherry Red or Colorado Red.
Does any one know the difference in the reds? I am not going concours here just a good Paint job to replace the one from 1985 which shows its age.
Only doing the outer portions of the car, too much trouble to strip everything down.
I think it was Colorado red in 1985.
I am curious to the difference between the two reds.

Joe,

No Bugeye was ever painted in Colorado Red from the factory. That's a big Healey color and is a bright red with a hint of orange in it. Bugeyes were painted Cherry Red, which tends toward the maroon side of things. If you're looking for a good match for Cherry Red look for "Regency Red" they used on E-Types.

During one of my few conversations with Gerry Coker, designer of the original Austin-Healey Sprite, he wanted them all painted the red used on 1958 Ferrari’s, which will be the color I have my Bugeye painted if I ever get around to beginning that project.

Thanks for the information
The late 50's Ferrari's were very very lovely. Maybe that will be the plan although finding the Ferrari color numbers from that era is difficult.
a racer from the Finger Lakes painted his street Spitfire a Ferrari red and it looks great.
Have to think here , spring project. the present paint is only 32 years old

Hello Joe,

A few years ago I did a respray of my 59 Bugeye and went with 1999 Dodge Viper Red. Its a really nice dark red with no orange tint. Something to think about. Also HealeyRick is correct, the only color red painted on the bugeyes was "Cherry Red"

Good luck! Be sure to post up some pics of the paint job when done!
