A few years ago when I was selling a bunch of stuff on ebay I had a customer that wanted to use a bank check. I talked to my bank and they suggested If I took it that it would be best for it to clear all the way back through the originating bank by hand. A process that could take two weeks.
Mute point for this particular thread as the buyer agreed to a wire transfer, but mabye applicable for others in a similar situation.
