Rechroming scratched bumper

My rear bumper is scratched from contact with a concrete wall, more than superficially but not really deeply.
I have been told a chroming shop can add a layer of brass or nickel to fill the scratches, then rechrome, can any experts offer opinions or guidance, please?
Thanks, Simon.

Brass is the thickest layer in triple chrome and is used to provide a smooth base and fill areas. The nickel layer is thin and used for color/shine and the chromium layer is very very thin and used to protect the nickel and adds a small color shift (cooler). From my experience they will need to strip the entire bumper to rechrome it. Here's a short step by step for the triple chrome process:

Hello Simon,

as John said, it will need stripping and re-chroming. There are two ways of getting the scratches out, either using an abrasive wheel\mop which will make the steel thin (depending how deep the scrathes area) or to fill either by welding or brazing then abrasive finishing.Once the metal is shiny smooth then it can be plated. Plating is merely a covering and needs the base metal to be smooth and shiny for a bright plated finish, very similar in fact to painting, the base surface must be right first.
