Rebuilt heater

64 BJ8. I just got my heater radiator rebuilt. All shinny and new. (see next post for photo).

This post will show a photo of it before I sent it out.
My question is, on both the top and bottom of the radiator was glued some sort of material, about 1 1/2" wide. It looked like some sort of thick hard jute material?

Is it suppose to be there? What is the purpose? If needed, what was it and where do I get it. How do I attach it?

Maybe the PO put it on, and it should not be there? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hi Roger,
Very nice. My heater had that stuff too. I think it was to keep the top & bottom of the heater box from sounding like a snare drum.

Hi Roger,

Mine had the felt type strip on the top and bottom too. It does press against the covers and keeps the cover from rattling. You should be able to find strip felt in the weatherstrip section of a hardware/home depot store and glue it with contact cement to the heater core. Try to get the same thickness or perhaps you will need to build up two layers to make it work.

Cheers,
John

Hi Roge, Be sure and replace those old horse hair buffers with a piece of carpet or preferably neoprene sponge rubber. Looks good!---Keoke

Tell that Greg fella. those horse hair things are packing pieces. The matrix is smaller than the outer case and it keeps the load off the tube that goes to the heater valve and prevents the matrix from flopping around in there.--- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Keoke, Neoprene sponge rubber? Would that be the same stuff that goes between a trunk bed and the shell? Weather striping, black in color, with a self stick on the bottom. Comes in a roll of differnet lengths, thickness' and widths.

The hardware store carries thick felt, light brown in color, same thickness as what was on the heater. It has a self sick back. Comes two large squares per pack. Would it be ok to use the self stick, or should I remove it and use epoxy?

Or what about the other option of using the black weather striping that goes between the truck bed and top?

I'm concerned about the glue melting of the self stick. What do you all think. Thank you, Roger

The thick felt will be ok Roger, make it just a little wider than the old Horse Hair things and when it gets sandwiched in it ain't going no place so its own adhesive is adequate.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Thanks Keoke for following up! And of course, thanks to everyone for sharing. What a great place, BCF. Roger

John, I appriciate the link. And for your taking the time to post it. Have a great weekend, Cheers, Roger

Hi Tim,
All you need to do, is remove the heater, take it apart. Bring the radiator to a good local radiator shop and they rebuild it good as new. They rebuilt mine in 3 days.

I also replaced the control valve (for it was leaking) with a new one from Moss Motors. You should be able to get one from other vendors also.

While I was at it, I replaced the 1/2" hoses with new. Replaced the felt that was glued on top and bottom of the radiator. (it came back from the radiator place without the orginal horsehair felt)

What the heck, being it was apart, I unrivited the aluminum Smith plate, sanded and painted the box. Rivited the Smith plate back on. The rubber seal on the open/close valve was in good shape, so I did not replace that. As they say, she cleans up nicely. see attachment.

Good luck, Roger
