Rebuilding SU's?

A project I may be tackling later this year on behalf of Dad's MGB, so I'm askin', is it terribly difficult? I rebuilt the Stromberg on my old Midget 1500 years ago, and it didn't seem to hard, and the instructions for the SUs don't seem to bad. Anything I need to watch out for? (Haven't decided whether to rebuild the existing carbs or buy a used set and futz with those).

Piece of cake! Just take one carb apart at a time so you will have the other for reference. Use only genuine SU rebuild kits

Yes they are easy to rebuild but get (if you don't already have) a manual and follow the settings. Do not use any sort of abrasive on the piston and inside the dashpot, even metal polish.
Just use carurettor cleaner or paint thinners.

easy to rebuild. simple design. just get genuine SU parts. it was the tuning that threw me for a loop in the beginning.
what i learned recently from the good folks here and in print, is you have to get only two things right when tuning: balanced air flow and the mixture (lean vs. rich). they are wonderful carbs when you understand them.
 
Rebuilding SU carbs is not difficult and is alot easier with a few special tools. A jet centering tool is a must and can be purchased seperately or as part of a kit from Moss Motors and probably most British car part suppliers. This tool center the jet assemble in the carb body and aligns it with the piston. The complete tool kit also has an offset wrench to adjust the mixture adjustment nut and tools to check air flow balancing. Do heed the warning NOT use any type of abrasive to clean the piston or the inside of the cover. Good luck.

Hi William,
You should do a piston drop test, which is in the good manuals, to make sure the carbs are rebuildable. If there's too much wear in the piston/dashpot assemblies, they need to be replaced. Good used ones are out there and they can be bought new. Joe Curto is great for any SU parts. Everyhting else is rebuildable and I have a .010" oversize reamer for the throttleshafts if you need that done. I'm just in Oak Park.
