hi guys this is my 1st rebuild of a triumph motor and i have a few questions about it ;1st my main bearing cap bolts have an S on them and no washers i ordered new ones from canley and they came with an L on the bolts plus lock washers ; can i trust my old bolts or do i use the new ones; the S is a stronger bolt from what i have read; 2ed these thrust washers why do we have a full washer faceing the clutch but only half of one on the other side of the bearing cap ;any advice is welcome rick.

You're probably going to get answers split down the middle on #1. I reused my old main bearing bolts. I was buildign a street engine and I've read that the original fasteners Triumph used were good quality. I have great doubt about the quality of stuff made today. If dong anotehr engine I would probably use the ARP bolts, which are actually threaded rods with nuts in the 1296 (I think).

Sorry, but not sure I understand the second question. On Triumph engines, you only have a "half" of a thrust washer on each side of the rear main bearing. Its one of the weak points of these engines. Once they get some wear on them, the washer tends to drop out and inot the opil pan. You then get some bodacious end play on the crankshaft. If it goes on for long, the crank or block can be ruined.

Thanks Bill never had thrust washers on a small chevy ; my rear main bearing cap has a thrust washer pinned to it; so that would be the only space for it ;and one on the other side of the bearing cap is this right.
