Rebuilding a Caliper

I am in the process of rebuilding the calipers on my BJ7 and need some advise. The manual indicates that you should not split the caliper in order to rebuild. How can you get the retaining ring to seat properly without having the two halves separated? Why is it so important not to separate the halves.

Thanks,

RAy

Hi Ray,
The factory apparently made the recommendation to not split calipers. I don't think anyone knows why for sure.

I would guess that 95% of owners DO split the calipers with no problems. Some reuse the old bolts, some use new bolts. There is a square section O ring in there that is available from several vendors.

Ray,

I recently split both of my calipurs in order to remove some frozen pistons, and have had no ill effect. I did, however, replace both of the "O"-rings. No leaks, no problems. Go for it!

I picked replacements up at a local auto supply house that all the mechanics in town use. Be sure that the "O" ring stands proud of the surrounding surfaces before you re-assemble. If not so, the replacement is too thin and will leak.
