rebuild up-date

My engine is almost complete. I expect to be on the road in a day or two, hopefully. First the pics:

Now the questions. I'm putting a clutch kit in it and dont quite see how the bearing removes. Is it pressed on? how do I get it off? Next question: My Pacesetter header isn't flat. Is there any way to deal with this other than having it surfaced at a machine shop? I notice it comes with a thick nonmetallic gasket, will that compress enough to take up the slack? How much tolerance would there be for how flat it needs to be?

Eric, headers can have the mating face trued by a good muffler shop. Be careful using a thick paper-looking gasket as these are going to burn out rather quickly. These are often referred to as a "header gasket" in the catalogs. A metallic gasket of good quality is the way to go.

I am starting to regret painting my engine boring black!

As for the clutch release bearing, it is just pushed on. If I recall correctly, I took it off with a few taps with a rubber hammer.

Very pretty. I soooo want to get the engine out of my Spit and clean everything up, but Ian says he won't do it unless I agree to do a rebuild at the same time, so it won't be happening anytime soon. When the time comes though, mine will be the same nice maroon color that I did on the tranny. Should look pretty spiffy with my black exterior.

Nice color selection. That will brighten up the engine compartment. Don't forget that now is the time to get everything that the engine blocks or partially covers under the hood cleaned and painted.

Not that I would ever deviate from the factory original.........

Robyn, I agree with Ian. As long as it's out tear it down and rebuild it all.
Paul, I cleaned in places I hope to never see again and waxed the firewall but drew the line at painting.
Now the details:
Hot tanked
Crank turned and balanced
New King trimetal rod and main bearings
Oil pump rebuilt
Rods rebuilt.
Cylinders bored 30 over
New 9:1 pistons
Cam reground duration 230 lift .260
Tappets surfaced
Weber carb rebuilt
New bronze valve guides
3 angle valve grind
Head surfaced
Flywheel surfaced
New ring gear.
New clutch bearing, plate, and pressure plate
New driveshaft
I have a new header but that has issues and will be going on later.
My engine blew up March 2 and the weather is getting nice finally. Lot's of rainy days since then. I hope to be driving this week.
I also have a pair of SU HS4's I got right before the disaster but they need rebuilding and a manifold so that's on the back burner.

Your engine compartment didn't need any painting. Nice waxing and detail work.

We actually had a couple this year. Rather snow sometime than the flooding we can get.Rain melts the snow in the mountains

We now resume our regularly scheduled programming of the engine rebuild update, which has been in progress while Don and I did silly stuff.

I can't believe I missed this thread! looks great Eric. too bad we just started getting rain. so have you rolled it over yet or are you still double checking and triple checking things? this is the stage of an engine rebuild where most people wake up at 2am and suddenly realize they may have left one of their stubby wrenches in a cylinder. i wish i could show off a pretty engine, maybe next paycheck.
