Drained oil pan. Coolant expelled looked like this:

After the coolant drained, out came the oil.

Removed bonnet; radiator; cross-supports.
Looks like this:

Decided to pull the head first in case she sticks. Metal
in the oil pan as well.

Posted the pic of the coolant because it came out of
the oil pan. Obviously a sign that something is
terribly wrong.

Yup ! Hopefully you were right about it being the head gasket, as otherwise you are probably looking at a cracked head or cylinder block.

Yeah, that's my concern too. I'll be digging further
into it today. By tommorrow, likely know more.
Bought the engine hoist from HF last night. Got to
bolt it together, yet. Didn't have the folding type
in stock. Young salesman says: No prob, take this one
and exchange (within 90 days). Had a great discount
sale -- cost $125 with tax and a cheap set of screwdrivers
out the door.
Two ton a little over-kill, but the deal was on the
biggger unit, so I went for it.

Before you go any further, DISCONNECT that BATTERY!!

Hey 2! Good job on the photos.

Nice looking carbs- suggest you tape the openings shut
to keep crud or worse from getting inside.

PM me with your camera specific and photo software you are
using. You could use a little help. Great effort this go around.

The two ton rating will be when the boom is retracted to its shortest position. the rating will be lower when extended to where you will need it. When you have the engine in the air over the front of the car it will not seem like overkill.

And while it's out is the time to do the engine compartment restoration.

Right, Tom? Where are those pics of your removal project?

Metal in there, too? I think we all feel your pain. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Well, there's a lot of room in the plan for "Might-as-wells"...

Yeah, Mickey. Well, we'll see as she develops. Right
now I think I just maybe don't appreciate how bad it
really is. Kind of like losing someone close and it
hasn't quite caught up with you yet?

Oh, and by the way: I really, really like your quote.
Thanks for looking in, fellas.

Yup - textbook reaction.

Huh...what?

Oh, sorry. Thanks - I was thinking about what I was going to say next! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Right, Tom? Where are those pics of your removal project?

Yeah, Paul, I just keep looking at the "might as well"
list that is mounting.

Oh, well. Thanks to you and others for looking in on
me.

2wrench, here are a couple pics that might help.

As long as you are going to strip it down it might be about as easy to do as much as you can while it is in the car. Not only is the engine not rolling around but the result is smaller and lighter to handle. And the parts that you remove might be damaged if left on. As you can see I left the oil filter and adapter on as well as the starter. The filter and adapter could have been removed, I just didn't.

There is also a pic of the engine with the cables still on.

From the pic of the engine stripped to it being on the ground should be 2 hours or less with time for lunch included.

The first two show how far I stripped the engine and other things.

There are four pics so this will take two posts.

These show the engine on the ground and the gutted bay. You can see how I mounted the lift. I did not use the lift eyes that come on the engine. Be careful with the bolt in the rear. If it is too long it can break through in to an oil passage. Not the end of the world, but would need to be sealed later. Ask Paul how to seal it.

Now is when the fun really begins.

The trail of "might as wells" soon turn into, "I guess I have no choice now, but to -----".

Remember, these cars aren't being made any more. It will be worth it when you're done.

That's the one I have ... wouldn't trade it.
