Rear Wheel Bearings

Hi All,

I'm working on completing (starting?) a restoration of a 1960 BN7. I'm assembling the rear axle and hub and noticed that the bearings have a plastic ring or shield covering the ball bearings.

Is this a sealed bearing. It doesn't look like there is an easy way to get grease into the small space left uncovered by the plastic shields.

The bearings are NSK 4209BTNG, sourced from Victoria British.

Thanks

Joe

Hi Joe, Originally the rear bearings were not shielded. However if they are shielded on the out board side only it will tend to reduce oil leakage from the seals. Lubrication for these bearings is provided by the oil in the differential and conventional greasing is not required. However, this is the first time I have heard of this.--Fwiw--Keoke

jjs, huh a plastic shield? perhaps your talking about the large "o" ring that sits inside the flange? perhaps you should check and see if you got a healey rear end in there at all? i for one happen to be visually stimulated "a typical trait for men" pictures help.--- keoke i cant wait till he starts talkin bout da tools fur dis job! will learn em. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Keoke, Thanks for the info. The plastic ring (shield) is on both sides of the bearing. There isn't an outboard side to the bearing, it looks identical on both sides except for the manufacturer's markings.

Based on your comments, I'm going to install the bearing and not worry about packing with grease.

Joe
