Rear wheel bearing packed with grease?

Hi All,

I received some new rear wheel bearings today. They are packed with grease. I don't see anywhere in the manual that it states the bearings should be packed prior to installing in the hubs. Is this a common practice or should I clean out the grease before pressing them in? I guess that the grease will work its way out after a while and the lubrication will be from the diff oil, but ......

We have exactly the same question about Spridgets (the rear axle design is similar in this respect).
Everyone I know greases the rear wheel bearings before installing them, even though they will recieve lube from the diff oil. I guess at some point, the small amount of bearing grease will mix with the diff oil.
This shouldn't be a problem unless you use sythetic oil in the diff.
 
The British thinking about design and assembly is different than what I grew up with... I spent most of my early wrenching days with German automotive. Their phylosophy was different. Even American design is fairly different. Heck, the British is different from most others /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif I worked on some MG's early on, but not to this extent.

But, I really do enjoy my LBC!

Hi Nial, Where new bearings are being installed they have been greased as a preservative and do not need to be cleaned prior to installation. ONTOH, where good running bearings have been removed temporarily I see no reason to grease them prior to re installation. similarly, as you noted the large difference in volume between the differing lubricants should not present any problem whatsoever.--Fwiw---Keoke
