Rear suspension up-date

This weekend we did Napa wineries and a LBC show in Woodland in 100 degree temps. (less than 175 cars due to the heat) We did 400+ mile. The rebuilt rear suspension was incredable. We hit 90 mph on the freeway (smooth as silk) and lots of winding turns at speeds not before attainable. Totally unbelivable. The engine temps were at 165 most of the time in spite of the air temps. This was the best drive ever. Even my wife said so.
I haven't heard who won the best Healey but Roger was there with his beauty, so no contest.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Except for the heat, it sounds like a poster card weekend.

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Tahoe-

Great to hear everything worked out well with the rear suspension. I'll be in Sonoma 5/29-5/31 for the Wine Country Classic Vintage Races https://www.winecountryclassic.com/. This years feature is the celebration of the 100th year of the Morgan. So far I think the only Healeys on the grid are Jon Shirley's '54 100 in group 2 and my ' 57 100-6 MM in group 3.

It will be the first race weekend with the newly rebuilt race motor and the triple 2 "SU HD8 Ruddspeed system. It should a great weekend for LBC lovers.

Dougie, nice engine bay. What are the dual hoses goin across valve cover?

Thanks,

Vintage racing requires you contain all fluids discharged or released from your car during competition. The dual rocker breathing hoses run into a container, aka "puke tank" in the left fender well.

What kind of carbs & manifold are you running?

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Patrick,

I'm running three 2" SU HD8's that have had the "Des Hammill" race modifications added. My manifold is a Ruddspeed period hi-performance race manifold. I custom designed and installed a dual cable throttle system and the cold air box which utilizes cnc 2" stub stacks within it.

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Hello dougie,the pictures look great.

It turns out that I was at PIR last year briefly and saw your car on track while you were doing a practice session.

I happen to know Bob Greer the previous owner of the car but didn't realise it when I saw it at PIR.

I know this now because I spoke with Bob last weekend and he told me he had sold the car to someone in the Portland area.

Are you racing both days at Wine Country Classic ?.

If possible I may try to get there one day but as yet haven't decided which one.

Best Regards,

bundyrum.

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Bundyrum,

Yes, in fact I bought the car from Bob and thought he might be at the classic as well. I'll be racing all weekend if every goes well. I hope the only thing I need to work on is my driving while at Infineon. With a new motor surprises seem to come from the strangest places. I have a chassis dyno appointment scheduled for 5/26 which should eliminate some concerns..................and hopeful not raise any new ones.

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Hello dougie,

I was going to call Bob tomorrow and tell him you'd be at Infineon.

I'd be interested to see the results of your dyno session if you wouldn't mind as I'm sure a lot of other people on this forum would be.

If you get the chance to make a paper copy of the results I'd like to see it please.

I'll only be at Infineon on the Saturday but will look you up.

Best Regards,

bundyrum.

Jon Shirley is eat up with Ferraris, I did not know that he also ran a Healey. Has he been running the Healey long, and are you guys like friends?

I mean, anyone that can take BOTH, a Testa Rossa AND a GTO and thrash them around a track (Ferrari Classic Challenge events split categoriess by drum brake/disc brake cars) you have to admire. And well, I suppose envy too. For that matter, I admire (and envy) YOU TOO

Good luck Doug, hope everything works as planned this weekend!

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Randy,

Different Jon Shirley, the one who races a '54 Austin-Healey lives in Sonoma, CA. The other lives in the greater Seattle, WA area and races with us here in the NW in SOVREN, huge car collection, great racer, wonderful guy. I haven't met the California Jon Shirley yet but look forward to.

That cold air induction is a really cool! Was that your idea?

Re: Rear suspension up-date

Randy -

You'll be happy to know the other Jon Shirley (Medina, Wa) was at the Wine Country Classic with 2 cars a 1934 Alfa Romeo P3 and his 1957 Ferrari 250 TR. He gave them both a good workout on the track as they were designed to do.

Hello dougie, Great to meet you at the Wine Country Classic and seeing the car again.

Only sorry I couldn't stay for longer but I did enjoy the time I had there.

Your car looks well cared for and it was good to see it out on the track.

Best regards,

bundyrum.
