Rear spring shackle grease nipples?

I am trying to work my way through the 3000 mile maintenance for the 1st time. The manual shows a grease nipple on the rear spring shackles, but I swear I do not see them on my car! Can anyone give me a clue on how to find them? Is it possible that my car does not have them? I don't see any evidence of grease anywhere around the area of the shackles on either side. Also, my car is up on jack stands, on my lift - how can I rotate the drive shaft in order to get access to the grease nipples on the u-joints and sliding shaft? I can see the one on the u-joint, but can't get my gun on it. Thanks!

There should be grease fittings for the rear shackle frame mounts. They are extended length fittings which face toward the rear of the car. The ends should be just above the rear box crossmember & a couple of inches inboard from the cross member ends. They are in a tight & usually dirty spot & might be pretty well covered. I have attached a pic. Late BJ8's may not have this fitting.

The front U joint can be accessed for greasing, from inside the car, by removing a rubber plug in the side of the transmission cover. It is located on the LH side, low, & to the back of the cover. It's a lot easier to do it when the whole cover is off.

Just thought of something. I always replace the grease fittings with the long type. About one inch long or a bit more. Makes it much easier to get the gun on.

I don’t recall seeing any greasing points on either my original or new springs.

I would have chimed in ere earlier but it was not clear what model car you were working on.However, The BJ8 series cars do not have grese fittings on the rear springs.The rear spring shackles are supported in rubber busings.Fwiw--Keoke

I can see where the shop manual is confusing. There is no section JJJ for the different leaf spring saying the grease fitting was deleted. The pictures of the nipples on J.9 and Q.5 show different cars but don’t say “Hey, if you got a BJ8, don’t be lookin’ fer ‘em”

Thanks one and all for your responses. I just got around to reading Norm Nock's column in Austin Healey magazine where he also mentions that these fittings are only found on BN2-BJ8 Phase 1 cars. I have fallen behind on my recreational reading as the April 15 tax deadline approaches... say, isn't there a tax credit for "historical preservation"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif
