rear speaker

morning..
I'm surfing around eBay and checking out all the variations of 71 B's for sale and almost all of them have a rear speaker set-up like this: (see attachment)

is this normal/typical? Surely this wasn't a factory option.. perhaps unspoken knowledge of aftermarket placement? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Just a personal thing...I can't stand to see the cars cut up back there. That bulkhead was designed to keep the car structurally sound, not mount speakers. I have 5.25" speakers in the front doors and they're plenty loud enough without hacking up the sheet metal.

To answer your question thought - it wasn't a factory option (like Steve said), but unfortunately is somewhat typical.

that's what I thought, but I wanted to double check with you all before making a tragic error and hacking up that section.

thanx!

I agree with aerog, I hate to see MGB's cut up in that location, but it is so very common. It's a horrible place for speakers, especially if you take the top down as they would be completely covered. Personally, I don't have a radio, the whistling of the SU's through the K&N's and the throaty sound of the Peco are music to my ears!

Why permenently butcher that bulkhead? I just have a pair of bookshelf speaker with velcro that sticks nicely to the carpet and keeps the speakers from sliding around. I can detach them and move them when I want to.

I hacked and butchered up the back of my B. And the speakers sound wonderful. As much a purist as I am, I'm a music fanatic moreso.

Actually, I came home one Saturday and there were two gaping holes in the bulkhead staring at me. Dahubby decided I needed rear speakers there when we were in the midst of the radio drama. They're nearly completely unnoticable with the top down.

I like Bruce's solution, although I've always thought about headrest speakers like some Miatas and Pontiac Fiero's had. The Fiero also had a nice little sub-woofer that might fit in the that spare battery area (yeah after I put the box in).

I have speakers an my headrests (Fiero seats), 2 4" in the doors, 2 6X9" in the rear panel (they were there when I got the car), and I'm about to put a small 10" sub where the batery box would be in the earlier cars. Oh, I also have 2 amps, 1 480w and 1 600w.

hrm.. where are the amps mounted? and I assume you are going to make a box for the sub? if you do, can you send me a photo when it is done/in? thanks.

I don't have the box made yet, or the amps in, but the amps will mount in the trunk. I'll post pics when it gets done. I have more mechanical work to do before I have time to work on the radio.

I havent cut up the bulkhead in my car...
ive mounted my 1600w amp to it in the boot

I've just wacked the 6*9's in the panel behind the doors (not easily) and the 10" subbie is smack bang in the middle
Sounds great! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

ah... the good 'ole ninja stereo system... when I get around to adding/replacing the one in my 'B, I'll be going the stealth route too.

Those 6x's look good, but looks like it could be a pain getting them in place. I like the sub idea, but I'm thinking out of sight, out of mind.. would hate to have someone cut through the top to grab a sub or two.

btw: your video link returns a 404 file not found error.

hehehe, i know mate... i worry about my sub being knocked off every day!! LOL
I'm amazed its STILL there honestly...

and yes, the 6*9's took a whole day to get them JUST RIGHT
not an easy task getting where ive put them.
