TR2/3/3A Rear shocks and rattle

Iam trying isolate the cause of a niose that sounds like a loose panel or knock from under the rear driver side.I blocked up the rear tires and although I suspected the exhaust pipe the noise was less when I lossened the rear shock to spring plate bolt and held it while bouncing the car.The shock seems to work when bouncing the rear, full of clean fluid,no leaks mounting bolts tight.
So questions are-

Are these shocks known to knock?
Who would be good source to order rebuilt and then send in core after swap?
Thanks
Tom

The shocks themselves are not really known for knocking, but a chronic problem is that they can loosen on the frame, and then wallow out the bolt mounting holes. Early on in production the frames had to be reinforced because of the severe twisting loads on the shock. So, first step would be to check the mounting bolts on the shock to frame for tightness.

Thanks for reply John. After my post I went back to check the mount bolts again and I could turn the bolt heads so I pulled wheel, got a wrench on the inside and was able to tighten about 1/4 turn.I also found my gas tank strap bolts seemed to have loosened up so tightened them also.
Much better now,and I will pay close attention to the mounting holes when I finally do pull the shock, hopefully not until winter when I plan on rear spring replacement.
Thanks again
Tom

Sounds like you got it, on a 4A IRS the awful knock I had was from a shock that felt fine but had maybe 1/16" side play, made me crazy.

Peter Caldwell (IIRC) at Worldwide Auto Parts is a good place to buy rebuilts and then send in your cores. Contact them first, there is a form they want you to fill out regarding painting, valving and so on.

Thanks for the Link Randall.I will save it for when I need them although I may only need the tightening, some future Loctite or mount repair.
And yes Richard, seems I got it for now, time and milage will tell.
Thanks
Tom
