rear oil seal vs. gasket

Country flag
Offline
I've mounted a new rear engine oil seal and I'm making a gasket to fit between the steel plate and the engine. Do I mount the gasket behind the seal or cut around it? If it is mounted behind, it will not make as good of a seal if I match the pattern of the old seal (part will rest on the gasket and part will not - the gasket is paper thin). I can alter this to go completely around the crankshaft and behind the oilseal which is bolted to the engine block. Any thoughts?

Hi TH, Nothing but good gasket sealer goes between the oil seal housing and the block, it should also be used at the interfaces of the two halves of the seal housing. The gasket is timmed to fit outside the seal housing. The gasket probably gets quite thin at the bottom edge.---Fwiw---Keoke

OH!,be sure and close both loops at the ends of the seal's spring or it may JUMP OUT!
