Rear oil seal...silicone or not?

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

While the page above is difficult to read, the torque
settings for the various parts are listed alphabetically.

Look down that list to the "O's" and you will see
"Oil gallery seal," and if you run a straight edge
accross the page, like a sheet of paper or something,
you will see that those bolts are described as 1/8 in
in size and only require 5 to 8 pounds.

Doing my best to do the right thing, even by admitting
I was wrong.

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

I have verified the bolt size as 5/16 so I'm wrong.
Sorry about that. Brings to question, though, what
the heck they refer to as the oil gallery and why
are there such low torque specs for them?

Why is it the oil gallery is described as what leaks
if the one special brass-washered nut is is not
installed on the oil seal housing properly?

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

Mine are torqued at 20 ft.lbs. and the copper washer is on as the previous picture shows. That's all I can say.

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

Apologize to you and to the poster of the question.
I am wrong. Nonetheless, I want you to see why I
believed as I did and I certainly meant well.

I should know better than to even begin to question you, Paul, even a little bit. And I say this sincerely and
literally, not one iota of sarcasm here.

I will exercise greater disgression in the future.
Hoping that each of you will forgive me.

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

2W,

No apologies necessary. I didn't take it offensively, nor should you take what I typed that way. I just didn't have anything else to say about it and wanted you to know what we did with mine, so that I wasn't giving "theoretical" advice, but real world today advice.

These manuals are almost as confusing as a Peugeot manual and parts catalog, which have different names for nearly all of the same parts.

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

2wrench, what book is shown above with the pink highlighted sections? I'm hoping to follow your lead soon and that book looks like a good reference. Thanks, David K.

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

The seal "housing" in question is alloy. The copper washer is on a seal point and the lower toque spec's would be what I'd go with. Hylomar on the copper ring and LockTite on the threads as "precaution" or OVERKILL.

JMO, for what it's worth.

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

Hey, thanks guys! Much appreciated. Soon after I posted I accidentally found the torque spec page in Bentley after searching and searching for it, and found this:

Crankshaft cover to block 15-20 ft-lb
Crankshaft sealing block attachment 10-14 ft-lb

I assume the sealing block is the front aluminum piece, and the cover to block is the oil seal housing?

So consensus for those oil seal housing bolts would be 15-20 ft-lb?

Re: Rear oil Iseal...silicone or not?

Oh, I think I can shed light on this...

The oil gallery screws are the ones that plug the oil gallery itself in the block... aka those little hex head "set screws." e.g., there's one peeking through a hole in the rear engine plate. So the seven bolts in the rear oil seal housing appear to be 15-20 ft-lb. Tightening them now!

Thanks guys!
