Rear main seal question.

Mark,
That sounds very interresting and I would like to have a copy. My car leaves a trail like a herd of wounded buffalo.
Thanks, Rut

The rear main should not be leaking before you even get it to run. That is, unless you really overfilled it. Check for other sources instead. Could be the oil pump or its gasket.

Hey Mark,
I'd love to get the instructions. If you get a few minutes send 'em to me at :
fwillison@mac.com

or just post 'em here!

thanks,
Fred

PS what is the "parting agent" ?

I have several of those kits (from PaulA) left (including instructions).
The parting agent is the thin, clear plastic wrapping from a pack of cigarets (cellophane).

Cellophane huh? Wouldn't Saran wrap work better?

The cellophane is stiffer and seems to work better. Paul worked this all out, I just have the left-over kits.

I know many have had very good results with this technique. The only problem is that in essence, you have to destroy the half moon seal to make this work. (It requires drilling holes so the JB Weld has someplace to adhere) If you ever want to correctly line bore the part, you'll be out of luck. Getting a replacement (if you can find one) requires a purchase as a set including a new rear main cap as well. In my view, it's an expensive proposition if you ever want to do it right later.

Thanks for all the help. So, basically what you are saying is that oil leaks are normal if the engine is tilted/on a hill?

Since I haven't got the engine started yet I won't know if there is an issue, I just got concerned when oil started leaking everywhere (I noticed when I hoisted it out of the car the other day).

Was the transmission still attached when you pulled the engine? If so then much of the oil will run out the gearbox when the driveshaft coupler pulls out. This could be most of the oil you saw.

Yes and no. The transmission was connected, but I only have the flywheel connected. I am just trying to get the engine to turn over for the first time.

The previous owner rebuilt it but never started it. After looking over all his work and testing the basics, I think I am ready to start it. I'm waiting on a starter since the two originals I have don't seem to be turning it over well (turns once then draws so much current it drains the batter after a few turns).

Once I get the starter I can test to see if the scroll is working correctly.

Hi Rut
I contacted BillM, who is the owner of this information, and He gladly sent me the scanned instructions in PDF files. So if you'd like to PM me your email I can get them sent out to you.
Mark
