rear license late mounting.

I have a BJ8, phase 1 that has the rear plate mounted on the rear shroud below the bumper. At some time in the past I got stuck in gravel and the car became hung up on the rear plate. I believe that the shroud got dented where the plate mount as it seems to be pushed in. The car is at the paint shop and if this is a dent by the plate, I can have them pull it out. If it is meant to be in a little to make the plate more vertical, they can leave it alone. What do you all think?

I have a phase 1, BJ8. My rear shroud is not dented, but maintains the same curve where the plate bracket is attached as elsewhere. The bracket itself can be bent a little to insure that the plate sits vertical. I think I would have them pull out the dent on the shroud, and then bend the bracket to position the plate.

Thanks. It was not very visible behind the bumper so it never bothered me before.

Here's another alternative to prevent damage to the shroud from the license plate holder. The mounting is available from Moss. I believe it was standard on BJ8 models and used earlier for European variation cars.

Instal a Piano hinge on top of the plate mount and have it swinging behind the bumper. I run this for the last 12 Years and no problemo.

I have a door hing which has a closing spring attached and it works fine but it is like closing the barn door after the cow is gone. I also replaced the shocks and springs so I sit a little higher. The ones on the bumper are not meant to be on the phase 1. Thanks

Phase 1 BJ8s had the rear license plate attached to the shroud below the rear bumper. This continued for Phase 2 BJ8s for the USA and Canada up to Body Number 79900 (approximately chassis number 34900) After that, the plate was mounted on the bumper.

Actually, I was only asking if the attachment was indented or on the surface. I had a mishap with the car sinking into gravel that left the car supported on the rear plate. I guess it did push in on the rear shroud. I am having it pulled out as it is currently at the body/paint shop. (I get her back in 2-3 weeks then get to put all the chrome and stuff back on.)
Any one have thoughts on a clear coat over Ivory/Old English White?

Nice Randy, I like the tan top with the brandy color. Have you thought about using the "bumperettes" instead of the bumper in the back?
