On my BJ8 I am installing a rear engine oil seal. Why does the rear plate have to be reground if the seal ring fits behind the flang and is slightly smaller? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

It will hit the back plate when you install it. Think of the back plate sitting flat against the rear of the engine but your new seal sticking out about 3/8 of an inch behind the end of the crankshaft. I have two different brands of the rear seals and they both stick out too far.

Yes TH, Jerry is correct. Should you lack the facilities to cut out the back plate you may obtain one on an exchange basis from BCS in Stockton. Bill Bolton in Oregon "May" also be a source. However, it can be done with a hand drill and a rotary file. Miserable way to do it though. But it's cheeper this way.---Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

th, did they supply you with a template? of the two types of seals beeing offered i believe one will require the removal of more material then the other. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Yes they did supply a drawing/templet to cut to. I guess I trace it onto the plate and start cutting/grinding. Or since I am taking the trans to Bill Bolton the end of the month I can see what he can do (read $$$?).

I'll be using a rear seal, but I'm inclined to use an DW aluminium back plate instead that is already set up for the seal.

Is that worth your consideration?

The seal carrier will not clear the back plate. Your seal kit will come with a template. I used an angle grinder and the round seal. Dennis Welch uses a square carrier.

I think this has been covered before and the answer was "no," but is there any advantage of one type of seal (square vs. round) over the other?

I thought it would be easier for me to enlarge a round engine backplate hole than a square one.

I replaced the steel plate with the aluminum one from DW. It fits well and saves alot of weight. I lightned the front end of my BN7 by replacing the head with the alloy version, the back plate, a new aluminum radiator, a tubular manifold etc. The weight reduction really changed the handling of the car considerably - the road feel is not comparable to before the changes (zero understeer). This way, the 3000 handles alot like a good BN2. Long story short: If you want to spend the money, it is definitely worth changing the plate while you are at it.
