now that everything is apart - is there any reason I couldn't assemble the brakes and then bolt the them & the backplate on the axle? OR will that mess up the bearing installation somehow?
OK, stripped both sides today. Everything came apart without too much trouble, but one of the 1 /78" hub retaining nuts (and associated tab washer) was pretty chewed up. One more part to order...
Now, the inside of the passenger-side drum was awash in fluid, hopefully the new seal, o-ring and paper gasket will fix that. But the BACK side of the backing plate was covered in about 1/2" of thick black sludge, looks like a mixture of dirt & gear oil.
Question; from the exploded diagram, I don't see any joint that could leak located inboard of the fixed axle flange (the part onto which the backing plate is bolted). There is a drain hole that goes through that flange though, presumably to channel any leaks away from the brakes? Can I safely assume that all that greasy dirt is a result of oil leaking from the axle?
Just figured out why the driver's side hub retaining nut was so chewed up on the driver's side... it's reverse-thread. The DPO must not have figured that out.
Now, the worrying part is, I took it off yesterday. :| And the DCO didn't figure out it was reverse-threaded, either.
So, did I strip the threads on the hub? Or did I just mangle the nut (replacement on its way via express post)? Have to wait until I get home, to know for sure. Fingers crossed...
Still looking for thoughts on the above oil question...
Yes, that's exactly what I've been praying... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I brushed off a lot of the mangled nut shavings, and I think I would have noticed if the threads had been completely wrecked... But then, one might think I would have noticed that they were LH thread, too. :S I'll take a pic when I get home.
The correct socket, a 2' breaker bar, and a 4' cheater, and it actually came off quite easily!
Lordy, I hope I haven't ruined a perfectly good rear end! But I have to hope that the material used to make the nut is less-sturdy stuff than the axle itself. The nut corners certainly weren't hard to deform.
Thanks, Bill! Hmm, I'm guessing that shipping from WA to Ontario might be prohibitive, for something that big & heavy! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Here's hoping it cleans up OK.
1) got half my brake parts today, including the d/side hub nut. Upon inspection, these look more like a base metal alloy, not steel.
2) the threads on the hub are OK. The nut threads halfway on without any help, and I'm sure that after a little cleanup with a small file, everything will be fine.
I pick up the last of my parts Thursday AM, after which the brake-a-thon begins in earnest!
