Rear Brake Rotors

See the July 2009 issue of Healey Marque. The article is by Matt Parrish and purports to be a system developed by Martin Jule. Having reread the article, I must admit that machine shop work and welding is required, so it may not be a good option for those who seek a bolt-on solution. My apologies for suggesting it was a better option without qualification. However, the result is a very modern rear brake system with operable handbrake.

Very worthwhile thread - have thought for a long time it would be useful for someone to build a rear disc kit with all the bits using US or Japanese calipers and discs.

The problem with the magazine article previously mentioned is it's a little hard to figure out his drawings. What's really needed is a fully-illustrated picture story or power point on the installation.

Recent issues of Healey Marque have included the author's E-mail addresses (see Reid's editorial on the opening page), so the author may have many more pictures available than what could be published in the article.

I'm sure the author would be pleased to get your feedback.

Barry,

What is the number stamped on the calipers?

Thanks,

Hello Legal Bill,

Thanks for that, now I need to go and find that issue wherever I may have left it.

Hello Genos2,

The price on those rear caliper brackets works out to $US197 and that's before you get them here. Can't honestly say I'll be rushing out to buy a set in the near/distant future.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

Duane,

I'll try to post some pics tomorrow, good ole Vista won't acknowledge the existence of my camera anymore, so the pics I took tonight will have to wait till tomorrow. There are some #'s cast into the rear housings that mean nothing to me but maybe somebody here will recognize them as meaningful. Here's a shot of the calipers after rebuilding but it doesn't show the #'s very well.

Hello BarryP,

They look almost too nice to put on a car and not see them. Yes I know you can still see them through the wire wheel.

I think the numbers you are referring to are Dunlop casting numbers, meaningless unless you have another caliper to compare it to.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

Barry,

I appreciate the pictures! The comparison calipers say DUNLOP PAT NO 688 382.

Thanks,

Duane

Here is a pic with casting #'s legible that I promised. The disks have no #'s or markings.

Barryp,
do the beautiful Calipers bolt to a adapter plate that ties them to the axle, as the typical Welch/ Cape/ AH Spares etc. kits sell? If so can you show a photo?

Here's an interesting site that gives quick reference to many std. Brake Rotors dimensions. If you plug in a particular vehicle, you can then bring up a spec sheet that shows most of the rotors dimensions for that vechiles stock rotors. As previously mentioned a Range Rover is a candidate. A 1991 year, for example does appear similar. I've only reviewd a few, but I'm sure there are more possible reasonably priced candidates, ready to go or with some minor revision. Let us all know if you find more. I'll keep looking myself

Hello mwagon,

Thanks for the link. Another opportunity to look for that arcane brake hardware.

We'll get it sooner or later at least I hope.

Best regards,

bundyrum.

Merry Xmas,
The rear Rotors used on a BMW 535i & 525i in the years around 1988-1991 are very close to the rotor dimensions that Barryp has listed for his 100MM. New rotors can be purchased for the <$40.00 range each thru lots of sources, such as Autohauz.
Dia.= 11.8" (324mm)
Hat Height= 2.3 (61.1mm)
Rotor Thickness= .39 (9.9mm)
Weight= 11.6 lbs.
I have obtained a set & mounted on my 100-4. The only modification needed is to redrill the bolt pattern. I'm in the process of making the mounting brackets to use the XJ6 rear Calipers. I did obtain a 1991 Range Rover Rotor. The diameter is 11.4", so its a little small to get full pad contact when using a XJ6 Caliper, but may be fine when using the Dunlop Caliper. The bolt pattern matches the healey bolt mounting holes, but hole diameters need to be enlarged. The Range Rover Hat thickness would ideally need to be machined thinner to reduce weight from 16 lbs. Thickness is .44" as compared to the BMW at .26".
Here's another site that shows the rotor dimensions- Brake Warehouse. Scroll down past the brake pads & you'll see a diagram showing the rotor dimensions.

Wow, now that sounds readily available!

Do you happen to have any pictures (we love pictures), particularly of the mounting brackets for the caliper and details of the hub/rotor?

If you do have pictures and can't post them, E-mail them to me and I will put them in this thread.

How does the front/rear balance feel, and did you incorporate some means to adjust the bias?

Single or twin circuit master cylinder?

Thanks!

Does anyone know what car can be a donor for the Dunlop calipers (front & back)? Jaguar XKE S1? XK150? Any other?
