Rear brake drag

why

Healey 1965 3000, On first 15 minute drive one of rear brakes drags, maybe R since hard stop it locks. When it drags, stabbing pedal or pulling handbrake will free it, during drive it comes and goes on its own as well. After sitting for an hour it no longer happens until next day's drive. Replaced shoes, springs, turned drum, rebuilt wheel cylinder, backed way off on adjuster so handbrake no longer functions. Maybe related to clips that locate wheel cylinder in slot in backing plate and movement of wheel cylinder? Very stumped. Any thoughts?, Jay, offlineJ@aol.com

Have you replaced the flexible brake hoses? After 40 years they deteriorate from the inside and can actually collapse. When you step on the brake pedal, brake fluid is forced through the flexible brake hoses into the calipers (front) and cylinders (rear). When you let up on the pedal, the fluid should return through the flexible hoses, but if they have collapsed or deteriorated, sometimes that doesn't happen and the brake pistons (front) and linings (rear) drag. There are two lines in the front and one in the rear. Change them all. Cost only about $60 total.

Good advise from shorn. To add to that if you can catch the problem in the act then open the bleeder . If it spews and releases drag then it a hydralic problem. If not it is mechanical. Alan

Thanks all, indeed some years ago replaced front flex hoses to cure minor instability, somehow (after 40 yrs of hobbyist wrenching)neglected to realize that rear has flex hose as well, hose on order.
