General Tech Rear Axle Spacer Shims—Solid Axle

Those extensions are used 90 degrees to the angle of the torque wrench handle. That nullifies their length and the torque is correct. If you use them at other angles, you must do math to correct the torque reading...so easiest to just use them at 90 degrees.

You did catch my comment that you should save the lock tabs until you have the correct shims? They are outside of the backing plate and do not affect the clearance.

I think we are still not on the same page here. So I will try to go through the procedure.
First you now have both sides of the axle shimmed and the bolts tightened..
Go to one side and put your gauge on the axle. Push the axle toward the center . Set your gauge at 0. Now pull the axle toward yourself, take the measurement.
Now move the gauge to the opposite side of the axle. Push the axle to the center like you did on the other side and set the gauge at 0. Now pull the axle out and take the measurement.
That is it.

I’m at .040 shims on each side and end float of .005 on each. I really appreciate all the help. I think I’m finally there—
