rear axle seal

seem I am haveing trouble with a rear axle seal. have replaced bearing, seal, oring, and paper gasket and still am getting gear fulid on the brakes. the seal surface is smooth the seal is not torn up or nicked. It is definatly coming from the bearing seal.

Any sugestions

Carl, are you installing the seal with the grooved, or "lip" side, facing outward, toward the bearing? I've seen many that were installed incorrectly at some point. A friend recently had the same problem, and that was the cause. It seems the PO had installed the seal backwards, and when my friend changed it, he installed it the same as it was, with predictable results.

with the housing laying flat on the work bench and the bearing is out. looking down into the housing I can se the spring and the lip seem to be pointing toward where the bearing would be.
I hope that is understandable. I might add that both sides were replaced at the same time and only one side is leaking. both seals were put in the same way.

Could the fulid be to high in the housing? My housing has a fill plug that I used to fill it. But the third member also has a plug on the side that seems to be lower.

Carl, the seal is installed the correct way. Are you sure it is seated squarely. and all the way into the hub?
The correct oil quantity is 1.8 pts. (29 ounces) from empty, filled through the plug in the rear of the axle.
Check and make sure the vent isn't blocked.

I found a post on another form about useing bearings with 1 side sealed

would this be an option

Hmmm. I suppose that would be an option. Just make sure that you put the sealed side on the same side as the seal in the hub.

Carl, am I correct in that you are doing this with the axle housing removed from the car?
Incidentally, I edited my post about the sealed bearing.

The axle is still in the car. Yes ise you changed your post. I was going to say, that don't sound right. LOL
