Rear axle oil seals for BN1 or BN2

My car is a late BN1, same axle as a BN2, the shop manual & Moss catalog both show no O-ring here like the later cars have. The paper gasket is marginal at best, that's why I'm considering some other options, including a shielded (not sealed) bearing. Anyone have any experience here?
