Rear Axle Bearings

Hello

Can someone let me know what special tools are required to remove the rear axle bearings? I need to replace the seals.

Thanks

Myles

The procedure and necessary tools are covered in section J of the Workshop Manual. (You DO have the workshop manual, don't you?) Biggest difficulty is removing the eight (yes, eight, not six)-sided hex nut, #7 in Fig. J.2. I've seen the special socket for sale on Ebay, also info on this forum. I suggest you search for "hub nut" or some such to find it.

Otherwise the procedure is straightforward. Make sure to replace the gasket #5 with a new one and check the measurements as per Section J.4.

From memory, I'm thinking that it's a 2-3/8" EIGHT (8) point socket that you need to undo the nuts retaining the hub. Other than the parts, that's the only specialized tool. Looks like I used a slide hammer contraption too, to coax the hub off.

Moss Motors (and likely others) does or did carry the tool. I made my own, but I'm funny that way.

Notice the the original nuts were marked LH or RH, for the thread direction.

Thanks. I have the manual and I also have the hub nut socket that I bought from ahspares in the UK. Can't say it's a great fit though. The manual mentions some type of puller? Is that the type that Randy shows? Is there another one that I need to extract the bearing?

Thanks

Mules,
send me your email and I will email you a nice ms-word doc showing the procedure.
