REALLY bright lights....

well, got my alternator today... haven't put it in the car yet... will do it this weekend.

I thought these things all came with pulleys already attached. So all you had to do was hook it up in your car. I was suprised to see my new alternator did not have the pulley already installed on it. Since the new one didn't have the pulley and the old one did, I naturally wanted to keep my pulley... I asked the guy for some tools so I could swap the pulley, and he started changing it for me... eh... I WOULD have been out of there in 5 minutes if he let me do it... instead, I got the pleasure of watching him fumble around with removing the pulley for 20 minutes all the while the line of customers was growing really long. As soon as he took off to help the line of customers I finished swapping out the pulley and finished the necesary paper work to get my core charge back.

had a minor disagreement with the guy too. the clown fumbled the pulley and dropped it when it finally came off the shaft. In the process I *thought* I saw the key that keeps the pulley locked into position on the alternator shaft fall to the ground. He says there wasn't one. I could be wrong, but why have a notched in the alternator shaft and notches in the pulley if yer not gonna put a key into the notches... Either way after watching this guy fumble for so long... I decided that I just wanted to get my core charge back and get outa there. So, I had the guy torque the pulley onto the new alternator and give me my paper work. Of course... the guy at the register apparently thought I needed to pay for the new alternator even though I handed him my reciept and core charge refund slip... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

You might want to go back and see if they can find a correct size woodruff key. Even with the proper torque on the pulley it still might spin under a heavy load.

Another harrowing tale of... "Parts Monkey."

Tune in tomorrow to see if Rob will get another woodruff key to fit his new alternator... after watching 'The Boyz' scramble around on hands-and-knees, searching for the old one for fifteen minutes denying it ever had one the first place....

I'd rather not go back to that place... if I don't have to... surely there's a way I can obtain one else where, or fab one without a bench grinder...

Hey, man, Let's Review:

After I posted a snide comment with regard to incompetent parts people, who really shouldn't be "helping" with anything but fetching sparkplugs by application look-up. Then they BOTCH someone else's property, try and dodge responsibility. Sounds simian to me... Your inference is that I would: A) Behave in like manner. B) Somehow take on characteristics akin to incompetent "Christmas Help" behind a sales counter. or C) Deny responsibility for my actions.

Which did you intend? I'd like to know, so I have an idea how YOUR mind works. Explain, please? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

You might get lucky at a good hardware store and possible home depo and the like. If they dont have the correct size a little work with a dremmel should fix you up.

Ace may very well have in the boxes where they have all the bolts and nuts and stuff.

Any good machine shop should have tons of them. All Shapes 'n sizes.

short day at the office tomorrow. Gonna take alt'nater with me. There's a alt'nater/starter rebuild shop less than a mile from my office. Figger I'll stop by there on my way home to see if the guy can fix it up right.

You'll be doin' a test drive Saturday mornin'!

muwahahahah! 'tis great to work with competent people! I decided I'd stop at the alt'nater shop on my way in... just incase the 'ole guy had a running queue or something. As luck would have it he wasn't busy. He pulled the pulley, searched a parts bin full of miscellaneous parts and pulled out a woodruff key of the exact size needed to get the job done right! Five bucks and I was in and out of the place before I could even light a cig!

Hind sight 20/20 and all, I prolly should have gone to this guy for the alternator first... he had a reasonable supply of alt'naters in stock, couldn't tell if any were the '80 Ford Fiesta Bosche alt'nater though.

Also felt slightly bad for the British Car mechanic that has his shop on the same property... he thought I'd come to see him since I was driving a 'B and all. Seems he has a Jag, MGB, X-1/9, and some unknown car under a cover there that have been sitting around forever... wish I had more time to hang around and chat with the guys to find out about the other cars there, but I was already running a little late and had to get to work...

hrmph... went out on a smoke break a 'lil bit ago... was raining. Hopefully, it clears up before I go home. If it don't, the new alternator installation will have to wait til tomorrow or something. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Heck, the alternator install just takes a few minutes. A little water ain't gonna melt ya - hehehehe.

Makes him all lumpy.

And he's got some engineering to do: fit the Ford unit to the B...

Oh, I liked the simplicity of the saturn swap.

the Ford unit is a Fiesta Bosche alt'nater. I got it done this afternoon. didn't take too much to do. The alt'nater tightening bracket had to go on the back side of the alt'nater cause it was hitting the alt'nater fan. BUT I got it on the car in short time (less than 40minutes) and 'tis werkin' gud! Would have had it on quicker if it weren't for the tightening bracket interfearing with the alt'nater fan... ah well it werks and i'm happy ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The alternator adjusting bracket had to go on the Back of my Saturn alternator too. Just fit better that way... I changed it to that after driving it the other way for about 2 months. Everytime I looked in there, it looked crooked. So eventually I pulled the whole thing and put it back in (to figure out what was crooked)... Short story long, I figured out the Adjusting bracket was the thing that didn't look right, so I moved it. It's been there for 2 years now, and looks "right", and has never needed adjustment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Glad you got yours in tonight... I really thought you'd wimp out on the rain... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif
