I'm with you on that 100%. Its a race car of moderate historic value, it should be left looking like its been racing and is ready for more.

This car looks like it could use some crust(not a typo) removal though.
 
Wow, didn't realize they were that expensive and rare. The XKSS street version must be worth even more.

Does anyone manufacture a replica of the D-Type?

Actually, that's why I was so surprised.
I've seen several nice D replicas. A fellow here in NJ built one from a XJ6 donor using mostly just photographs of a real one. The car comes to the Moss and TVR show every year and it's a knockout with it's hand-hammered aluminum body.
I also saw a D replica racing at a time trials at Lime Rock a couple of months ago (believe it or not, he was having a good race with a Passat wagon).

Something even more rare that the D-Type is the Jaguar C-Type (only 54 made compared to about 100 D-types). I personally know a guy in blackfoot Idaho who makes a really nice C-Type Replica

I wonder what the reserve is, since at over 1 million the car was not sold.
High bidder has great taste and a nice collection it looks like from what he has purchased on ebay.
 
I just stumbled upon this forum & it looks great. I have a D type reproduction that I just imported from Blighty in 03. It's a Mark Charles car built in 1990 using Mk 10 running gear & drive train. It had BIG (45mm) Webers that I had to swap for 40mm due to the US gas being oxygenated & high sulphur & now it purrs like a Kitten, which is what my wife has named her "Kitty". It's a long nose version with a tail fin & it's a ball to drive but the brakes are unboosted and need a heavy foot. These cars need all your attention when driving and lots of forethought. It has Dunlop VR radials which stick like glue so the rear end cannot be hung out like the car should be driven. I'd be interested in swapping tales with anyone that has advice on these things especially in the care & feeding & what to watch out for. Cheers Lads.. D type

I have seen several nice D-replicas in the eastern USA. As I mentioned above, one is owned by a fellow in central NJ who built it using a XJ-6 donor. He tells me that he hand-made the body based entirely from photographs of a real D and that it is "about" right. Neat! The picure below shows it, and the link (to a TVR show in NJ) shows more pics of it (plus some other friend's cars, such as the GT40 and the red Mini and possibly my race-Spridget)..

Our club runs a Fall time trials at Lime Rock (along with lots of other events) and last Fall, as I mentioned, a D-type replica showed up. I was flagging, so I got to see it slide passed the Morton Chicane numerous times....glorious! The car was from Mass., but I don't think it was your car (was it?)

Hello Sherlock,

What the C-Type owner neglected to mention is that this is a VERY valuable car.
Consider how rare an option it must have been to get a 4.2 litre installed in 1953!

It's really a shame that the racing team didn't install these as they would have won lemans years earlier. :=)
